Profile of TuraTura is a city and administrative headquarters of the West Garo Hills district of the state of Meghalaya. It is one of the largest towns in the state of Meghalaya. It is a valley located at the foothills of the Tura Hills below the Tura Peak. The town is located at an average elevation of 1145 feet. The capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong is located 323 kms away. The border of Bangladesh is located at proximity of 50 kms. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Tura.
The Origin of Tura -
The native god Durama was believed to reside in the hills of this area. The name Tura is said to be a corruption (by the British) of the God’s name.In earlier times, the region was under the administration of Garo kingdom, but was later succeeded by the Koches. The region was part of the West Garo Hills district when in October 1976; the Garo Hills district was divided into the West Garo Hills district and East Garo Hills district.
